Brockholes – Volunteer Ranger

Quick summary:  The role involves patrolling the nature reserve and carry out daily checks as well as being on hand to assist in emergencies or out of the ordinary situations. Volunteer Rangers are our eyes and ears out on the reserve. Zombie caterpillars on death march

Release date:  Tue, 01/08/2017 (All day) Main image:  Summary:  Zombie caterpillars are on a relentless march to their deaths on a Lancashire moss... The skins of the caterpillars have been discovered at the top of small bushes on our Winmarleigh Moss Nature Reserve, near Garstang. It means the caterpillar is infected by a microorganism, climbs to the top of the plant and then dies. The caterpillar is driven by the baculovirus which then bursts out of the corpse to seek victims below. read more...

A member of our marine team will be there with some binoculars so if you would like to join us then all you need to do is show up... The process is really straightforward – we will gather at the tower and spend a couple of hours or so looking out to sea, periodically recording environmental factors and of course any marine mammals that we see! According to recent studies, billions of tiny plastic pellets, known as 'nurdles' are lost into the UK environment each year. These can significantly harm marine wildlife once they make it into the sea.
